George Woo

Professor George Woo received his OD degree from the University of Waterloo. He obtained his MS and PhD in physiological optics from Indiana University. He is a Fellow and Diplomate in Low Vision of the American Academy of Optometry. In 2019, he received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from UW. In 2022, he received a University Fellowship from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).
He spent 26 years at UW as a faculty member before moving to PolyU as Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. He is currently an Emeritus Professor of both the School of Optometry and Vision Science of UW and the School of Optometry of PolyU. He has been an Honorary Professor at Sun Yat-sen University, Tianjin Medical University, and Wenzhou Medical University.
He served on numerous optometry, health, and research committees. He was President of the World Council of Optometry, the Asia Pacific Council of Optometry, and the Hong Kong Society of Professional Optometrists. He served as a Board Member of the Hospital Authority from 2008 to 2011, and Member of the Research Grants Council from 2000 to 2006.
He was Chairman of The Samaritans from 2015 to 2019. In 2020, he received the Hong Kong Humanity Award.
His research interests include primary eye care and vision rehabilitation.
